Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, has said she will propose expanding the bloc's list of sanctioned Russian entities by a further third, in comments made to the German conservative newspaper Die Welt.
A new, "most ambitious" package
In statements published in Die Welt's edition released today, the 49-year-old former Prime Minister of Estonia said: "For this autumn, I am proposing the most ambitious list of sanctions since the start of the war. Once adopted, these measures will immediately increase by a third the total number of Russian entities under sanctions."
Impact of sanctions so far
Kallas said that since Russian armed forces invaded Ukrainian territory in February 2022, EU sanctions have already "cost Russia dearly", depriving its war machine of more than €1 trillion.
Scale of the sanctions regime
Since the outbreak of the war, the EU has adopted 21 sanctions packages against Russia. The list of individuals and entities subject to those measures currently includes almost 3,000 names, according to the European Commission.
