A 25-year-old man began sinking and pulled his wife into danger after trying to swim back from the rocks.

A couple from Nepal were brought safely ashore after getting into difficulty at Akti Olympion in Limassol at around 5.30pm on Sunday.

The incident began when the 25-year-old man, who had limited swimming ability and little strength, attempted to return to shore from the rocks. He began sinking and, in panic, grabbed his wife, placing them both at risk.

Lifeguards respond with rescue board

Lifeguards supervising the bathing area had already identified the man as a weak swimmer in a hazardous location. They responded immediately using a rescue board, while members of the public who were swimming about 20 metres away also moved to assist.

The lifeguards safely pulled the man onto the board. The neighbouring LEM 15 lifeguard station, which is equipped with a jet ski, was also alerted.

“Without the timely intervention of the lifeguards and the capable swimmers who rushed to assist, the situation could have resulted in multiple casualties,” the Limassol Lifeguard Unit said.

After being brought ashore, the 25-year-old was examined and given first aid. He did not require further medical treatment or transfer to hospital by ambulance.

Safety warning to swimmers

The Limassol Lifeguard Unit urged people who are not confident swimmers to avoid difficult or rocky areas and not to overestimate their abilities, particularly when currents or strong winds are present.

Swimmers who get into difficulty should remain calm and call for help rather than grabbing anyone accompanying them, as this could place both people in danger.
