Police seized about 60 kilograms of opium poppy pods in 17 linked cases, while two suspects remain wanted.

Cyprus’ Drug Law Enforcement Unit has dismantled a network allegedly involved in importing and distributing large quantities of dried opium poppy pods following nationwide operations launched on 19 June.

Police said the investigation uncovered 17 related cases and led to the seizure of approximately 60 kilograms of Papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium poppy.

Twenty-one people were arrested and remain in custody pending trial, while two additional suspects are wanted.

Sixteen of the 17 cases have already been filed before the courts and referred to the Assize Court for trial.

Investigators also obtained evidence suggesting that three of the defendants had imported further quantities of opium poppy pods into Cyprus during the previous three months. They now face additional charges.

As part of efforts to block further imports, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit contacted the overseas company used to ship the parcels containing the seized products.

Police said the company subsequently introduced measures preventing the products from being shipped to the Republic of Cyprus.

The unit said operations targeting drug importation and trafficking networks would continue.
