Employees working in support programmes run by the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth staged a protest march in Nicosia on Thursday, calling for unemployment benefits and recognition of prior service.
According to an announcement by the PASEY-PEO and OEKDY-SEK trade unions, the workers gathered outside the PASYDY headquarters at 9.30am before marching to the Presidential Palace.
Three months without income
The unions said the workers are seeking a review of the current arrangements governing unemployment benefits, arguing that many have been left without income for three months.
They are also calling for the implementation of legislation regulating employment in the ministry's support programmes.
Recognition of previous service
In addition, the employees are demanding the advertisement of positions for workers who have not completed 30 months of service in the same programme but have accumulated years of experience in other Education Ministry programmes that have since been terminated.
The unions are also seeking formal recognition of that previous service.
