Unstable weather conditions are expected across Cyprus in the coming days, with showers, thunderstorms and even possible hail forecast for some areas as temperatures ease slightly.

A weak seasonal low-pressure system and atmospheric instability are affecting the region, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Today, following the dissipation of patchy fog and low cloud, conditions will become mainly clear. However, cloud build-up during the afternoon is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms to inland areas and mountainous districts.

Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Seas will be slight to locally a little rough.

Temperatures will reach:

  • 37°C inland
  • Around 32°C on the east and south coasts
  • Around 30°C on the remaining coastal areas
  • Around 26°C in the higher mountains

Tonight, conditions will remain mostly clear, although patchy fog and low cloud may form locally during the early morning hours.

Winds will gradually become light and variable at up to 3 Beaufort, while seas will remain slight to a little rough.

Overnight temperatures will fall to:

  • Around 22°C inland
  • Around 23°C along the coast
  • Around 17°C in the higher mountains

Rain and thunderstorms expected

On Monday, developing cloud will bring local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous and inland areas. Hail is possible in stronger thunderstorms.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue in the mountains and inland regions, with north-eastern areas also likely to be affected.

Temperatures to ease

Temperatures are expected to fall slightly on Monday before gradually rising again through Wednesday, returning to levels close to seasonal averages.
