Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Thunderstorms in Inland Cyprus

The four-hour alert runs from 1pm, with hail and rainfall of up to 55 millimetres per hour possible.

 

A four-hour weather alert will be in force on Wednesday afternoon as isolated thunderstorms develop over mountainous and inland parts of Cyprus. Some storms could become locally intense.

The warning is valid from 1pm until 5pm.

Hail and heavy rainfall possible

Hail may accompany some thunderstorms, while rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour.

Wednesday’s forecast

The unstable air mass affecting the region is expected to recede from Thursday.

Wednesday will begin mainly clear, but clouds developing around midday and early afternoon are expected to bring isolated rain and thunderstorms over the mountains and inland areas.

Winds will initially be variable and light at Force 3, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at Force 3 to 4. They may temporarily reach Force 4 to 5 along exposed coastal areas.

The sea will be slight. Temperatures will rise to 35C inland, around 31C along the western and south-western coasts, around 32C along the remaining coastal areas and 25C in the higher mountains.

Overnight conditions

The weather will remain mainly clear overnight, although locally increased cloud is expected across the western half of the island.

Winds will be mainly westerly to north-westerly, light and locally moderate at Force 3 to 4. The sea will remain slight.

Temperatures will fall to 22C inland, around 23C along the coast and 15C in the higher mountains.

Temperatures to rise from Thursday

Mainly clear conditions are forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Temperatures will rise gradually and noticeably through Friday, followed by little change on Saturday, remaining above the seasonal average.
