Party accuses ELAM of authoritarian stance and calls its proposals a threat to democracy

Volt has launched a strong attack against ELAM and its Nicosia parliamentary candidate Phoebus Kyprianou, following a social media post in which he proposed the creation of an Independent Authority to monitor specific parties and organisations, including Volt, with powers even to recommend their prohibition.

In a statement Volt described the remarks as revealing, noting that “they did not even have time to increase their electoral strength before removing their masks.”

The movement accuses ELAM of expressing “fear, authoritarianism and censorship,” arguing that its positions constitute a serious threat to democracy.

“Supporters of extremist ideologies of Hitler and the Junta came to tell us that they will protect democracy by placing us outside the law,” the statement says.

Volt further criticises what it describes as attempts to distort concepts such as “homeland” and democracy, accusing ELAM of never having truly supported the Republic of Cyprus and of viewing it as something to be controlled and restricted.

The party also calls on other political forces considering cooperation with ELAM after the elections to clarify their stance in light of these remarks.

Volt concludes by warning that such positions legitimise what it sees as a serious threat to democratic institutions, insisting that it will not be intimidated and affirming its intention to continue its political presence.
