The dismissal of trade unionist Giorgos Maltezos has been condemned by the Sectoral Council of Hourly Paid Auxiliary Secretarial Staff of School Boards, which described the decision as “unfair and retaliatory”.
In a statement issued on Monday, the council alleged that the dismissal was linked to Maltezos’ trade union activity and his defence of workers’ rights.
Council demands reinstatement
The council claimed that Maltezos was “targeted because he vigorously defended workers’ rights and denounced clientelist practices”, describing his dismissal as “a direct attack on trade union freedom and the union’s activities”.
It also alleged that the move was intended to intimidate those who resist arbitrary practices, stressing that trade union action “cannot be weakened by pressure from employers or other forms of intervention”.
“ISOTITA cannot be bought through state grants and will not yield to pressure, as it defends freedom, dignity and democracy,” the statement said.
The council expressed its solidarity with Maltezos and called for the immediate reversal of his dismissal, his full reinstatement and his return to his position.
It added that it would not allow workers or their representatives to be victimised, describing the protection of established labour rights as a fundamental struggle.
