The dam at Kato Pyrgos Tillyria has overflowed following recent rainfall, a development welcomed by local authorities and confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Speaking to Politis, Nikos Kleanthous, community leader of Kato Pyrgos, expressed strong satisfaction with the overflow, noting that it comes just three months after major cleaning works were completed at the dam.

Capacity increased after removal of sediment

Kleanthous said that at least 90,000 cubic metres of sediment had been removed from the dam during the recent works, significantly increasing its water storage capacity.

“This development gives us great satisfaction,” he said, adding that the removal of accumulated debris has allowed the dam to collect and retain substantially more water than in previous years.

Thanks to government and local authorities

The community leader also expressed his gratitude to the government, the President of the Republic and the Ministry of Agriculture for responding to what he described as a long-standing request from the local community to clean the dam.

He further thanked the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA Nicosia), which undertook what he described as a demanding project and completed the works successfully within the agreed timeframe.

Ministry confirmation and broader investment

The overflow was also confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture in a social media post, which stated that “today’s image of the dam proves that when planning, cooperation and political will exist, long-standing problems can be resolved.”

The Ministry noted that, after decades, the dam had finally been cleared of sediment, restoring its ability to collect and store water effectively.

In 2025, the Ministry allocated €1.15 million to irrigation projects, underlining ongoing investment in supporting primary production and the sustainable management of water resources.
