A rare and striking weather event unfolded on Monday, 4 May 2026, in the Troodos mountains, where the landscape turned white in conditions more typical of mid-winter than spring.

At Chionistra, snowfall and snow accumulation were recorded over the past hours, in what is already being described as a historic occurrence for the month of May.

New footage released by the weather platform kitasweather shows the extent of the phenomenon. In a post accompanying the video, it noted: “And yet it is not January but 4 May 2026 in Chionistra, following the historic May snowfall and snow accumulation of the past hours.”

The video captures a fully snow-covered landscape, with snow blanketing both the ground and vegetation, creating scenes rarely seen at this time of year in Cyprus.

According to the Department of Meteorology, snow depth at Chionistra reached 19 centimetres at around 11:00, while snowfall is expected to continue.
