A historic Harley-Davidson motorcycle once used to escort Archbishop Makarios has been fully restored and returned to working condition after more than 50 years out of service, Cyprus Police announced.
The motorcycle, a key exhibit at the Cyprus Police Museum, previously led the official motorcades of Makarios, the island’s first President. It is now once again operational following a full restoration funded and carried out by Harley-Davidson Cyprus.
According to a Cyprus Police social media post, the motorcycle holds significant historical value. It formed part of the Archbishop’s escort fleet and was originally donated to Makarios by a Cypriot expatriate in the United States. The donation included three motorcycles and a Cadillac vehicle.
For years, the Harley-Davidson played a prominent role at the head of official processions, becoming closely associated with the public image of that era. However, it gradually fell into disuse and remained immobilised for more than five decades.

The recent restoration was carried out under an agreement between Cyprus Police and Harley-Davidson Cyprus, with the company assuming full responsibility for both the cost and technical work required to rebuild the motorcycle.
Following the completion of the project, the vehicle is now described as being in excellent and fully usable condition, marking the revival of a unique element of Cyprus’ modern history.
Cyprus Police expressed their “warm thanks” to Harley-Davidson Cyprus for the initiative, noting that the restoration contributes to preserving and highlighting an important part of the country’s historical and cultural heritage.
